Not long ago, George Provol outsourced a key software development project for his education publishing firm to an Indian company after a lengthy search determined it was the best qualified firm for the job. … … …
… … … Provol, vice president and publisher of the college division of St. Paul-based EMC/Paradigm Publishing, found a highly sophisticated software engineering partner overseas. He initially spent six months researching potential software companies to construct an online course tool. After finding six contenders, four went through the request for proposal process-a California firm, two Twin Cities-area companies, and the winner, Zeus Learning of Mumbai, India. The business risk is large for Provol's division, which is just 35 people of a 220-person, $35 million firm. But Provol says price was secondary to the chosen software firm's experience and willingness to learn about EMC/Paradigm Publishing's industry. "I was concerned about how much energy and time they [would take] to understand our business and not just the technology or product," he says. "It means a lot in terms of what the product is going to look like."
The U.S. firms failed that test. In addition to being knowledgeable about the U.S. education market, Zeus agreed to sign U.S.-mediated legal contracts, and always has someone working U.S. hours, even though it's the middle of the night in Mumbai. … … …
